What caused it?Many southerners were angry and were very racist to all the colored people, and everyone who wasn't white, pretty much. After they couldn't own the slaves, they created codes to keep them under their control. Following these codes, the Jim Crow laws were created to prevent blacks from going to the same places and using the same things that whites did. It was mostly from the anger and hate, which contributed to racism.

What happened?
When these laws were put into effect, the blacks(African-American men) were largely barred from voting. Economically, segregation created a one way street: blacks could not open businesses in the white community but the white's were allowed to open businesses in the black community. As a result, the African-Americans enjoyed a far lower standard of living than white Americans. By World War 1, even places of employment were segregated, and it wasn't until after World War 2 that an assault on Jim Crow in the South began to make headway.
