The Raid on Harpers Ferry
John Brown is most famously known for his raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia. It was where he led 21 people-16 white and 5 black-to raid the federal arsenal. What he wanted to do was create an armed slave revolt, but that isn't exactly what happened.
He stormed the federal arsenal and armory, hoping that other slaves would join him, but instead, nobody came, and the militia came and attacked. He hid out in the engine room, but eventually, they captured him, killed many of his raiders, and put him on trial.
He was hanged on December 2nd, 1859.
The Abolitionist Movement did not give up their stance against slavery until the end, when slavery was finally abolished. However, many things would still remain, like black codes and laws restricting them.
